Games for balance training

Balance impairment is common in children with cerebral palsy and other movement disorders.

Specially developed games, which are controlled by the Nintendo Wii Balance Board, are used for balance training. It has pressure sensors in the legs and determines the movement of the center of gravity of the body. This information is used to control the game.

Depending on the level of motor development and the goals of rehabilitation, the patients can play in different positions: standing on their own or with support, sitting, or standing on their knees.

Controlling the actions of the character, the player moves in different directions, thus improving their movements.

Nintendo Wii  games

The Nintendo Wii has significantly changed the gaming industry with the introduction of games that are controlled with the movements of body and limbs. Exciting games can be used by a wide audience, as well as patients with moderate disorders of movement and balance.

In our institutions we use games WII Fit Plus, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, which we also encourage to use at home to all interested patients.

Games, yoga, sports - the capabilities of the console vary in complexity and content and are suitable for the whole family.

AbleGames research project

At the moment, our team continues to develop games to improve balance. Together with partners from Norway, Spain and Ireland, work is underway on the Horizon 2020 AbleGames project, which aims to create an online service with personalized computer games for children with cerebral palsy. An important feature of this service will be the ability to play online with peers.

Article “Personalized balance games for children with cerebral palsy: A pilot study” with the results of a study conducted by our team as part of the project under the Horizon 2020 framework was published in English in the Journal of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine.
